Officer Del Pearson, a decorated 8-year veteran, can wiggle his fingers and open his hand wide, but he cannot make a fist because of nerves damaged in his left arm from the shooting, reports the Chicago Tribune .
Officer Pearson was shot three times in the chest March 19, after confronting a curfew violator. After the shooting, doctors performed a 5 1/2-hour surgery, removing part of his collarbone to repair a major blood vessel that was almost torn in half.
