Kansas Deputy Fatally Shot Responding to Illegal Fireworks Call

The mortally wounded deputy opened fire on the suspect and hit him multiple times. The suspect died at the scene.

A 30-year-old Phillips County (Kansas) Sheriff’s deputy was killed Friday (June 27, 2025) responding to a call about someone “detonating” illegal fireworks.

The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook statement that Deputy Brandon Gaede contacted 27-year-old Kolton Griffith at the scene.

“During the encounter, the deputy developed probable cause to arrest Griffith. As the deputy attempted to place Griffith in handcuffs, a struggle broke out. Griffith pulled a concealed handgun and opened fire on the deputy,” the sheriff’s office said.

The mortally wounded deputy opened fire on Griffith and hit him multiple times. Griffith died at the scene.

Deputy Gaede died at a local hospital.

An investigation is being conducted by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
