An off-duty officer with the Kansas City Police Department was working a security job at a local shopping center early Saturday morning when he was shot and struck in the bullet-resistant armor he was wearing.

According to WDAF-TV, the officer went to investigate suspicious noises when he heard several gunshots emanating from a nearby wooded area.

The officer created distance between himself and the suspected origin of the shots, called for backup, and reported that he'd been struck in the vest.
