The longest serving active duty police officer in North Carolina has died.

The Kinston (NC) Police Department announced the passing of Officer Levi Simmons—who began his career in 1970—on Facebook, saying, "The Kinston Police Department, with great sorrow, is mourning the loss of one of their finest officers, Officer Levi Simmons. Officer Simmons is known as the longest serving, certified active duty officer in North Carolina. Early in his career in 1970 he was voted Policeman of the Year, while working with the Jacksonville Police Department. He later became a Kinston Police Officer."

The post said also that Simmons had touched the lives of many officers, department staff, and community members.

The social media post concluded, "He will be greatly missed."
