Citizens, local political leaders, and police officers from around the region plan to hold a ceremony on Monday afternoon honoring the first African-American officer with the Charleston (SC) Police Department to be killed in the line of duty more than 150 years ago.
According to ABC News, the ceremony will honor the memory of Private Thomas Martin—who was killed in the line of duty in July 1870.
Martin was shot as he attempted to quell a disturbance among a group of soldiers who had gathered in a local area and began causing a disturbance at the gate of the Citadel.
Martin was shot in the chest and died at the scene.
