A Richmond County (GA) Sheriff’s Office investigator was shot and killed Tuesday night around 9 p.m. in an Augusta convenience store.

Narcotics Investigator Cecil Ridley and several other deputies reportedly encountered several people outside of the Augusta Mart.

One man, 24-year-old Alvin Theodore Hester Jr., went inside the store and was approached by a law enforcement officer, WJBF reports.

Hester attempted to leave the store as Investigator Cecil Ridley was coming in. Hester then approached and fatally shot Ridley, authorities say.

The other deputy inside the store returned fire. Hester reportedly made his way to the parking lot where he encountered another deputy and raised his gun. More law enforcement officers fired at Hester, hitting him. Hester was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Ridley was reportedly working on a sheriff’s initiative to curb gun violence in the city.

Charges are pending.
