Last week, an officer with the Chico (CA) Police Department was surprised by the sudden emergence on the scene of a suspect search a lizard that had been hiding in the man's pocket. Video of the interaction quickly went viral on social media.

Not to be outdone, the Butte County Sheriff's Office—which shares jurisdiction with the City of Chico—posted an image of one of the agency's deputies with a wild deer in the back of a vehicle at a traffic stop.

The BCSO said on Facebook, "We see your lizard video Chico PD, we raise you a deer as a passenger in a vehicle. Last night, Deputy Raggio conducted a traffic stop and was surprised when she saw a deer in the vehicle. BCSO contacted the Department of Fish and Wildlife to respond and make sure “Elaine,” the deer was ok."

The driver had reportedly been treating the deer as a pet since it was a fawn. The Department of Fish and Wildlife will be working with the driver to find an appropriate home, which could end up being an animal sanctuary.
