A former Colorado Springs (Colo.) Police chief will serve as the interim Sanford (Fla.) Police chief to provide an outsider perspective on the Trayvon Martin shooting, reports the Orlando Sentinel .

Richard W. Myers brings three decades of law enforcement experience to a job he starts on Friday. In March, Sanford PD's Chief Bill Lee offered his resignation, saying he had become a distraction in the investigation. Chief Lee has been placed on administrative leave.

City officials said Myers would evaluate day-to-day police operations and "hold everything together until we decide what to do," said City Commissioner Mark McCarty.
