Police in Savannah say one of its officers raced into a smoke-filled home and used a fire extinguisher inside to douse the fast-moving flames, reports the Associated Press.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say Officer Matthew Jackson had arrived at work on Easter Sunday minutes before hearing dispatchers report a house fire directly across the street from his downtown police precinct.

Police said Jackson immediately ran outside, where he saw the distraught 80-year-old homeowner. Jackson asked her where the fire extinguisher was kept inside, then went inside and extinguished the blaze that began in the kitchen stove. Police say his action spared the home from further damage.
