An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department was shot on Saturday night as he and other officers pursued a fleeing suspect.

An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department was shot on Saturday night as he and other officers pursued a fleeing suspect.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, the foot pursuit began after LAPD officers with the Newton Area gang unit stopped a driver. The driver reportedly got out and fled. The officers pursued him for a stretch and then encountered a second man who was armed with a gun.

A brief gunfight ensued, with one officer being struck.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition following surgery.

The offender was also transported to a hospital, but his condition has not been updated.
