CA Deputy and Sheriff's K-9 Killed in Monday Night Shooting

A deputy and a K-9 were killed in a shooting with a suspect at Cal Expo late Monday night, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said. The suspect was also killed.

The slain deputy has been identified as Adam Gibson, a six-year veteran of the force. Gibson leaves behind a wife and young child, Jones said.

Sheriff Jones said a second deputy was wounded in the shooting and was listed in stable condition Monday night.

The K-9 killed in the shooting, Riley, was a three-year veteran of the department, the sheriff’s office said.

Jones said the incident started a little after 10 p.m. with a vehicle stop near the Cal Expo grounds. The suspect apparently fled and crashed his vehicle near the horse track. The suspect reportedly refused to communicate with the deputies, which prompted deputies to release the K-9.

The suspect shot and killed the K-9, Jones said, and then started firing at officers, so the officers fired back.
