Chicago Officer Shot Responding to Domestic

A Chicago police officer was shot and seriously wounded Wednesday morning in Lawndale on the West Side and a suspect is in custody, police said.

Officers were responding to reports of a domestic incident at about 3:40 a.m.

When they arrived on the scene, they encountered the suspect who was on the third floor and engaged police in a conversation. Superintendent David Brown said officers engaged in de-escalation tactics, but the man began firing down at the officers who were on the ground level.

One of the officers was shot in the thigh and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in serious condition. The injuries are considered non-life-threatening, ABC7 reports.

The suspect was taken into custody and officers did not return fire, Superintendent Brown said.
