The New Orleans Police Department has announced that it will discontinue performing what it called "informational checkpoints" at which officers were trying to "verbally provide information regarding the current stay-at-home order in place within Orleans Parish due to the current COVID-19 public health crisis." The officers also checked that the vehicle occupants were wearing seatbelts and that drivers had registration and proof of insurance.
According to TheLensNOLA.com, the department had initially planned on continuing to conduct the checkpoints until the end of the city's stay at home order on May 16 but has changed course and will end those activities on Friday.
NOPD spokesperson Ken Jones said, "The checkpoints stop tomorrow. Tomorrow is the last one."
