An officer with the Middletown (RI) Police Department who was badly injured after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck is reportedly "progressing very well."

According to, the first 48 hours following the Friday crash were "really touch and go" for the injured officer, but Middletown Police Chief William Kewer said Tuesday that Officer James O'Neil is "progressing very [well]."

Chief Kewer commended the actions of Portsmouth police and fire department members who responded to the crash.

It was unclear from initial reports whether or not O'Neil was on- or off-duty at the time of the crash.
