More than 150 residents of the small coastal Maine town of Gouldsboro gathered on Monday night to debate the merits of keeping or disbanding its police department.

According to the Ellsworth American, the town is considering contracting with the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and closing down the department that consists of two full-time officers and one part-time officer.

Much of the meeting's discussion revolved around comparing costs of the two alternatives. However, some residents were insistent that the debate be focused on the quality of current law enforcement coverage.

The measure will be revisited and voted upon during a meeting in June.
