An officer with the San Diego Police Department is in serious but stable condition and a vandalism suspect is in critical condition with life threatening injuries after both were struck by a passing car.

According to CBS News, the two were reportedly on the ground when the car struck them early Thursday morning. Both were quickly transported to a nearby hospital.

The department said on Twitter, "Officers attempted to take a suspect into custody for a vandalism crime. The suspect ran from the officers. While taking the suspect into custody in the street, both were stuck by an oncoming vehicle. One officer is in stable condition. The suspect has life threating [sic] injuries."

The names of the officer and the offender have not been released.

The driver—who has also not yet been identified—remained at the scene.
