The Minneapolis Police Department on Wednesday declined to investigate the domestic abuse allegations against U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, citing an apparent conflict of interest, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"Due to a conflict of interest, or the appearance of a conflict of interest, the Minneapolis Police Department will not be handling the matter involving Congressman Keith Ellison," the department said in a statement.

The Minnesota congressman's ex-wife—Karen Monahan—has accused Ellison of emotional abuse and one incident of physical aggression.

Exactly what law enforcement entity in the state will take up the investigation remains to be determined.
