3 People Died While in Police Custody in California on Saturday

3 in-custody deaths were reported in Los Angles and Ventura Counties on Saturday.

Authorities reported Sunday that a man died the previous day while in custody at the Oxnard Police Department, marking the third time a person died while in custody in the Ventura and Los Angeles Counties on that day, reports KTLA-TV.

Juan Zavala was arrested Friday around 10:15 p.m. for resisting arrest, resisting an executive officer and escaping from arrest, according to a Ventura County Sheriff’s Office news release.

“Zavala displayed bizarre behavior and signs of being under the influence of drugs,” the news release stated.

Two other incidents happened on Saturday.

Officers responding to a disturbing the peace report in Lancaster, Calif., believed the unidentified man was under the influence, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol vehicle.

The man later became unresponsive and died at the scene.

A third person died while in custody Saturday, according to a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department news release.

A female was arrested on drug charges Thursday and held at the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station.

Personnel found her lying on the cell floor and unresponsive while conducting a security check Saturday afternoon. She died later at a local hospital.
