Lubec, Maine, will likely be without regular law enforcement services for a year, after the Washington County Sheriff's Department canceled its contract with the town.

Sheriff Donnie Smith said his department is two deputies short and can no longer spare those deputies to patrol the town of 1,625 residents. The sheriff and Maine State Police will provide law enforcement services on an as-needed basis, reports the Bangor Daily News.

The town has also explored the option of forming its own department.
