California isn't expected to execute any of its death row residents in 2012, as the legal wrangling over the drugs used in lethal injections will likely continue throughout the year.

Gov. Jerry Brown and death-row inmates jointly filed court papers on Wednesday, assuring that a federal judge wouldn't resolve the issue until early 2013, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

Death row inmates sued in 2006, claiming the lethal-injection procedure poses an undue risk of a cruel and unusual execution. There are more than 720 California inmates now awaiting execution.
