Losing El Paso Police Officer Karl McDonough was like losing a "best friend," a fellow officer told the El Paso Times, regarding the officer's death in a vehicle collision by a drunk driver.
McDonough, 41, was killed, and Officer Ricardo Lopez, 39, was injured about 1 a.m. Wednesday when Alejandro Fierro, 19, allegedly ran a red light in his silver 2004 Mercedes and plunged into the patrol car.
"It's like losing a family member," an El Paso police union rep told the media outlet. "I mean, his (graveyard) shift is composed of 42 officers, and those guys work day in and day out with each other, 10 hours a day, every day, and they spend the majority of their time off with each other and their kids and families - so it's hard. It's really hard."
