Texas Town Disbands Police Force
The east Texas town of Kemp eliminated its police department, becoming the latest small-town department in the nation to shift to the county sheriff for law enforcement services.
The east Texas town of Kemp eliminated its police department, becoming the latest small-town department in the nation to shift to the county sheriff for law enforcement services, reports the Herald Review.
The city of 1,100 residents eliminated the department and decided to lay off the five officers in June. Alto, a town in east central Texas, eliminated its department in June 2011.
In recent years, several northern California cities have also eliminated their departments. Millbrae, San Carlos, and Half Moon Bay disbanded their police departments in 2010 and 2011.
