The Los Angeles Police Department's new impound policy that allows unlicensed drivers to retrieve their vehicles in less than 30 days is legal, California's attorney general said Thursday.
Attorney General Kamala Harris released an 18-page opinion, reports the Los Angeles Times.
"In our view, it is entirely appropriate for various agencies to adapt their policies as they best see fit to serve the particular needs of their communities," reads the opinion by Harris and Deputy Atty. Gen. Marc J. Nolan.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court to overturn the policy on the grounds that it may be illegal and could saddle officers with legal liability if the driver causes injury or death in the 30-day window following the impound.
