A senior intelligence officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been arrested and charged with espionage on behalf of a foreign power.
According to Fox News, Officer Cameron Ortis was taken into custody in Ottawa on Thursday following an investigation that led police to believe that Ortis had violated Canada's Security of Information Act, with aims to prevent the unauthorized leaking of sensitive information.
"The charges stem from activities alleged to have occurred during his tenure as an RCMP employee,” the agency said in a statement. "As this investigation is ongoing, we will not be making any other comment on this time."
If convicted, Ortis faces up 33 years in prison.
