The Vermont State Police have acquired a Lenco G3 armored truck that the agency will make available to city and county law enforcement agencies who may face an active shooter, high-risk warrant subject, or barricaded suspect.
The state police's Tactical Services Unit, a 19-member team, took delivery of the armored rescue vehicle in September, Capt. Rob Evans tells POLICE Magazine. The vehicle cost $255,398 with $189,400 coming from Homeland Security grants. Assets forfeited by convicted drug dealers were used to cover the remaining $65,998.
"Here in Vermont, we wanted to have over-the-road response, as well as on highways," said Capt. Evans, the state police's assistant field force commander. "We wanted to top have the ability to move personnel and resources effectively and safety across dangerous terrain."
The vehicle can carry 10 fully geared-up tactical officers, who respond with the truck. It's powered by a diesel engine, provides higher-riding clearance, and allows officers to deploy less-lethal chemical munitions from inside the vehicle.
