Zero Motorcycles has introduced a law enforcement version of its Zero DS, a fully electric dual-sport motorcycle for patrol, the company has announced. It will ship in mid-2010.

Zero has equipped its latest model with aggressive suspension, rugged wheels and dual sport tires to efficiently move riders over any surface. The Zero DS is a high performance motorcycle that is powered by Zero Motorcycles' Z-Force drivetrain.

"The Zero DS is designed for motorcyclists who want the freedom to ride wherever they want," said Gene Banman, chief executive of Zero Motorcycles, about the civilian version. "It is the world's most versatile electric motorcycle."

The police version adds red-blue lighting, a paint scheme tailored to the agency and a pair of side bags.

On the Zero DS, aircraft grade aluminum is used in the construction of the lightweight twin-spar frame. The motorcycle is engineered to minimize weight and the power pack is designed for maximum energy density, according to Zero.

The Zero DS is a zero-emissions vehicle, non-toxic and almost 100 percent recyclable. The power pack consists of lithium ion cells that are clean enough to be landfill approved.

The civilian version of the Zero DS is priced at $9,950.
