North Carolina City Approves New Police Vehicles for Recruitment Effort

The goal is to have enough vehicles in the fleet that officers can take them home. Chief Brian James said the department is losing officers to other departments that already offer this option.

The Greensboro (NC) City Council has approved the purchase of 20 new police cars to assist the Police Department in its effort to recruit and retain officers, according to Fox 8 .

The City Council agenda stated the initial purchase will total $1,160,300 for the vehicles, upfits like lightbars and other electronics, and cameras. The goal is to have enough vehicles in the fleet that officers can take them home. Chief Brian James said the department is losing officers to other departments that already offer this option.

The Fox 8 report said the take-home vehicle program is predicated on the anticipated construction of a new equipment services facility and additional maintenance technicians necessary for the fleet expansion.
