McVeigh's Execution To Be Broadcast on Closed Circuit TV

The execution of Timothy McVeigh, the convicted mastermind of the Oklahoma City bombing, will be broadcast on closed-circuit television for survivors and family members of the 168 victims, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced on April 13th.

Due to the unique circumstances surrounding the crime, the government will allow 10 witnesses representing the victims to attend the May 16 execution, Ashcroft said at a news conference in Washington.

There are only eight public seats normally available in the death chamber at Terre Haute, Ind., and many families of the victims have expressed a desire to either see the execution via closed-circuit television in Oklahoma City or in Terre Haute.

"The Oklahoma City survivors may be the largest group of crime victims in our history," Ashcroft said. "The Department of Justice must make special provisions to assist the needs of the survivors and the victims' families."
