After being arrested, a Maryland man drove away in a police cruiser and later shot himself with a rifle he found in the trunk, police said.

Mark Haas, 24, was arrested when he and another man were stopped by police investigating a reported disturbance, who found an unloaded gun in the 1993 Ford Mustang they were found standing next to. Officers handcuffed the men and placed them in the back of a cruiser. When the officers stepped away to further inspect the Mustang, Haas drove off in the police car, still handcuffed.

Haas’ girlfriend called police several hours later and said he was threatening suicide. He shot himself after police arrived, using a shotgun from the cruiser. The other suspect, Lee Nichols, 21, who remained in the car, was not injured, Maryland State Police said.
