Law Enforcement Arrests Parents in Truancy Sweep
Officers in California’s Sacramento County brought in 50 people in the area’s tenth annual truancy sweep, aimed at making parents accountable for students’ school attendance.
Officers in California’s Sacramento County brought in 50 people in the area’s tenth annual truancy sweep, aimed at making parents accountable for students’ school attendance.
About 90 arrest warrants were issued accusing parents of contributing to the delinquency of a minor by failing to send their children to school. This misdemeanor carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Some of those arrested also face charges for parole violations and possession of narcotics.
Although some might object to this drastic action, authorities say this was not the first time these people had been contacted and that arrests were not made because a student played hooky one day. They say it usually takes 30 unexcused absences before law enforcement intervenes at this level.
