A Texas police officer died Monday night after his patrol vehicle struck a light pole during a pursuit.

The Grand Prairie Police Department reports the death of Officer Brandon Paul Tsai, who had served the department since January. Prior to joining the department, Tsai had worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for five years.

Police say Tsai, 32, spotted a vehicle with a fictitious paper license plate about 10:45 p.m. Monday and attempted to stop the vehicle. But it fled from the officer.

During the pursuit, Tsai lost control of his squad car causing it to strike a light pole. He was transported by Grand Prairie Fire Department medics to Methodist Dallas Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, police say.

“He was a loving friend, a trusted colleague and an outstanding officer whose passion was providing service to the public,” states a police department social media post.
