Two Chicago police officers were shot and wounded early Monday while trying to break up a crowd following Fourth of July gatherings, authorities said.

The crowd was reportedly shooting fireworks in the street at around 1:45 a.m.

One of the officers was hit in the foot and the other was struck in the thigh, police said. They were taken to a hospital and their injuries were not life-threatening, police told ABC.

“Thankfully, they will be all right,” police Supt. David Brown tweeted.

The Chicago Police Department so far this year has seen 33 of its officers either shot at or shot compared with 22 during the same period last year.
