Police in Southern California were involved in a bizarre six-hour slow-speed chase with a man who was believed to be armed with a gun on Tuesday night.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the chase started at roughly 7 p.m. after officers received a report of a man with a gun.

The suspect - who has not been identified - had been stopped for a traffic stop and refused to get out of his vehicle, speeding away from authorities.

LAPD Sgt. Juan Garcia noted that the chase was unusually long, adding that many of the responding officers had to pull off and use their own money to get gas. He added that the driver - riding in a Chevy Malibu - had a full tank of gas.

Despite some high-speed driving at the start, the bulk of the chase stayed well below the speed limit in the 30 to 40 mph range. The suspect's car would even occasionally dip into single-digit speeds, the Daily Mail reports.

The driver was arrested for felony evading but had two outstanding warrants for burglary charges, police said.
