A sergeant with the Chicago Police Department participated over the weekend in the annual Allstate Hot Chocolate Run in his full SWAT gear. Just before completing the course, he saw a crowd of people gathered around an unresponsive woman on the ground.

The agency said on Facebook that Sergeant Mike Nowacki sprang into action, performing CPR until a medical team arrived and deployed an AED.

Also at the scene was Nowacki's girlfriend, Officer Erin Gubala, who was assigned to work bike patrol for the event and heard over the radio that her boyfriend was performing CPR.

After the medical team began to transport the woman to a nearby hospital, Nowacki finished the final meters of the run and after crossing the finish line got on one knee in front of Gubala and asked, "Will you marry me?"

Momentarily flummoxed, she eventually replied, "Yes."
