VIDEO: How Former St. Croix PD Chief Survived Harrowing Gunfight

On Aug. 18, 2012, Chief Christopher Howell of the St. Croix (Virgin Island) was wounded in a battle with a restaurant robbery crew.

His arm shattered by bullets and his vehicle incapacitated, Howell took a tourniquet out of a trauma kit and used it to stanch the bleeding. Without that tourniquet and the proper training on how to use it, he would have likely bled out.

Now retired, Howell recently started Project Triage to raise funds to equip and train all law enforcement and peace officers with trauma kits.

Police Magazine Publisher Leslie Pfeiffer caught up with Howell on the floor of SHOT Show 2014 and interviewed him about the new program.
