Two officers with the New York Police Department acted quickly in aiding a man whose arm was nearly completely severed in a chainsaw accident in the Bronx.

The man—identified as 49-year-old Richard Tirado—was unconscious in the passenger seat of a friend's pickup truck as the man frantically tried to find a hospital.

The New York Daily News reported that the man got the attention of Officers Amauris Rodriguez and Thomas Natoli, who then applied the tourniquet to Tirado's arm.

"We applied a tourniquet to a high part of the shoulder to stop the bleeding completely, and then rendered aid as much as we could until the ambulance got there," Natoli said.

Tirado is now recovering and reportedly in stable condition.
