Two Trenton (N.J.) Police detectives were shot and critically wounded by the boyfriend of a domestic violence victim while following up during an ongoing investigation at a residence.

Detectives Edgar Rios and James Letts were wounded in the Thursday morning shootout in the city's East Ward. The detectives returned fire, killing 23-year-old Eric McNeil, who had been released from state prison in May after serving three years and four months on a robbery and weapons conviction, reports the Mercer Times.

The officers remain hospitalized after surgery. Rios' wounds were more serious. He was shot multiple times in the torso and multiple organs were struck. Letts was shot in the shoulder and is expected to be released in several days, reports the Mercer Times.

The detectives went to the Hobart Avenue home at 8:43 a.m. to photograph the house as part of their investigation when they were suprised by the suspect.
