A small Arkansas school district is arming and training 20 volunteer teachers and staff with handguns for fall classes under a little known state law allowing license, armed security guards on campus.
The armed volunteers arrive at the public schools in Clarksville, a 9,200-resident community northwest of Little Rock, as a response to the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the superintendent tells USA Today.
The volunteers have undergone 53 hours of training and will be armed with 9mm handguns. Participants will be given a $1,100 stipend to purchase a gun and holster. The district is spending about $50,000 for ammunition and training at a private facility.
