Chicago Officer Shot and Killed in Apartment Building

A four-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was shot and killed Thursday night (June 5, 2025) while pursuing a suspect into an apartment building.

The Chicago PD had not identified the slain officer at press time. Local media and some area law enforcement agencies have identified her as 36-year-old Officer Krystal Rivera.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said during a press conference that the incident began around 9:15 p.m. with an investigatory stop.

The target of the stop fled from the scene into an apartment building and was pursued by officers. Snelling said officers believed the subject was armed.

Inside the apartment, a second person opened fire on the officers with a rifle, Snelling said.

One officer was critically wounded. Another officer shot at the gunman, Snelling said.

The wounded officer died at a local hospital.

The suspects fled the apartment and were apprehended by backup officers, according to Snelling. Three weapons were reportedly recovered.

Snelling called the slain officer “young, vibrant, and a hard worker.” He added that the officer had already taken two guns off the street on Thursday before she was killed.

At the early Friday morning press conference, Snelling talked about his experience of telling the officer’s loved ones that she was gone. “There’s nothing like walking into a room and having to deliver the message to her mother and young daughter,” he said.
