An Edmond, Oklahoma, Police officer was recently slashed and stabbed by a man while making a traffic stop on May 1. The motorist who was stopped was not involved in the attack.
In a video statement that includes dash cam and body camera images, the Edmond Police Department says Officer Caleb Hodam was completing the traffic stop when a man came up to him and launched a surprise attack.
Video from the incident shows a man—identified later by law enforcement as 22-year-old Ocean Hudson—spraying the officer in the face with pepper spray, attacking him with a knife, and attempting to take away his duty pistol.
During the attack, the suspect tells Officer Hodam that he “f@#ked up his life” and appears to be asking the officer to shoot him. He adds that he is supposed to be going to prison.
A civilian came to the aid of Officer Hodam. The two men were able to get the suspect under control. Backup officers took him into custody.
According to Edmond PD, Ocean Hudson was charged with aggravated assault and battery on a police officer and other offenses. At the time of the attack, a warrant was out for Hudson in another county for failure to comply with court orders on charges of possession of child pornography and lewd acts with a child under 16.
Officer Caleb Hodam underwent surgery at a local hospital and is recovering at home.
