The murder trial of two men accused of killing an NYPD detective during a botched robbery began Thursday morning in Brooklyn.

Prosecutor Kenneth Taub told a packed courtroom that Lamont Pride intended to kill Officer Peter Figoski at 2:20 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2011, to escape capture. Micheal Valez, the alleged getaway driver, is also facing murder charges.

Figoski, 47, confronted Pride on the narrow steps leading to an apartment in the Cypress Hills neighborhood. Pride is arguing that his 9mm handgun accidentally discharged when he bumped into the officer.
