Brooklyn narcotics officers shot and killed a man Tuesday who was a fugitive on the FBI's Most Wanted list wanted in connection with the shooting of a cop.
The man, Darin John Richardson, had been a fugitive since he allegedly shot and wounded a Cobb County, Ga., officer on Aug. 20, 2005.
Richardson attracted the attention of the NYPD officers who say they saw the man fiddling with something in his waistband. Believing that the man was carrying a concealed weapon, the officers followed him.
When confronted by the three plainclothes officers, Richardson reportedly drew a .38 caliber Rossi revolver. A witness told the New York Daily News that even though the officers were dressed in hooded sweatshirts, they had their badges out and clearly identified themselves as officers.
One of the officers commanded Richardson to "Drop the gun!" Another witness told the paper that the man did not drop the weapon and turned toward the officers.
Officer Michael Corvi fired five times and Det. Frank Sarrica fired twice. Richardson was reportedly hit twice, once in the back cutting his aorta and once in the leg.
The two officers were subjected to sobriety tests required by new NYPD policy. Both passed.
