California Sheriff To Add 359 Final Model Year Crown Vics
The fleet purchase will ensure consistent use of the Crown Victorias for three to four years, which will save money as worn-out patrol units are retired, and their parts are recycled and installed in the newer vehicles, sheriff's officials said.
The Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department can now purchase 359 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors, following approval by supervisors on Jan. 11.
Sheriff's department documents show it plans to buy 99 CVPIs in the current fiscal year, another 135 next year, and 125 the year after that, at a total annual cost of $2.14 million, according to the Southwest Riverside News Network.
The fleet purchase will ensure consistent use of the Crown Victorias for three to four years, which will save money as worn-out patrol units are retired, and their parts are recycled and installed in the newer vehicles, sheriff's officials said. In addition, police equipment and vehicle accessories adapted to the vehicle can be rotated.
An official told the newspaper that fitting the parts to different cars would drive up costs by as much as $5,600 per vehicle.
Possible replacement vehicles could include the Chevrolet Caprice PPV or Dodge Charger Pursuit, which will be purchased and field-tested over the next few years, the newspaper reported.
