A Montana burglary suspect was fatally shot by an officer he attempted to run down after attempting to escape in a stolen police car earlier this month.
The incident was captured on a Billings Police Department cruiser, reports the Billings Gazette. Dramatic footage shows the cruiser striking Officer Dave Punt, who later shot and killed Daniel Brawley as he attempted to escape.
Brawley, 29, had slipped out of his plastic zip cuffs while detained in the rear of Punt's cruiser. The officer-involved shooting followed an hours-long standoff at a home where a burglary was reported.
Officer Punt fired nine shots at the stolen cruiser, before it crashed, reports the Associated Press.
The cruiser was equipped with a WatchGuard video system that includes a feature called Record-After-the-Fact that allowed investigators to retrieve the video from the stolen vehicle, even though the system was not in an active recording mode during the incident, a company rep told POLICE Magazine.
