The Dallas Police Department—facing, as so many departments across America do, a staffing shortage—is looking at increased use of surveillance cameras to provide a "virtual patrol" to enhance coverage of protection against crime.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the department is looking to enhance what it calls "Starlight"—a pilot program involving surveillance cameras now installed at a small number of convenience stores—that feeds video into the department's Fusion Center.
Major Jim Lewis—who is over the intelligence-led policing division—said the goal is to expand the program to 20 locations in increments over the next few months.
The department is also expanding its surveillance cameras at police facilities and its camera trailers.
Motorola Solutions’ 911 command center software now integrates with Google’s Android Emergency Live Video, so callers can let first responders see their emergency with a single click.
