A trauma surgeon said Wednesday at a news conference that Orlando Police Officer Kevin Valencia is in critical condition but has shown signs of responsiveness.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said during a press conference that officers entered the apartment around 2100 hours on Monday and discovered that all the children held hostage were dead.

Officer Kevin Valencia was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Police Chief John Mina told reporters the officer,who is in his late 20s, was in critical condition but was expected to live. There are reports Valencia was shot in the temple.
