South Carolina K-9 Killed in Shootout, Suspect Dead

A furious shootout between Lee County (South Carolina) Sheriff's deputies and a man with a rifle Friday morning resulted in the death of the gunman, who was suspected of shooting and wounding an officer Thursday, and the death of a Lee County Sheriff’s Office K-9.

The Horry County Police Department, which investigated the shooting as an independent agency at the request of state agents, said that 27-vear-old Altson Modlin was dead at the end of the incident, which happened in Lee County around 10 a.m.

Modlin was suspected of shooting and wounding a McBee, South Carolina, police officer Thursday night and was the subject of a statewide search, WLTX reports.

During the shootout, a sheriff’s office vehicle caught fire and K-9 Mikka was killed.

Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said law enforcement could not reach the vehicle to help Mikka because they were under fire.

A Lee County deputy was injured during the gunfight and is reportedly OK.

The McBee officer who was wounded Thursday night is reportedly recovering but will need surgery on his arm.  

Mikka was a four-year-old Belgian Malinois-Hanoverian scenthound mix breed.
