After shots were fired at a Michigan State Police helicopter Tuesday evening, Michigan State Police troopers on the ground fatally shot a man in a northwest Detroit neighborhood when he opened fire on them, according to police.
The aviation unit known as Trooper 2 notified police dispatchers at about 7:30 p.m. that the helicopter was being targeted by a green laser being shined from the second story of an abandoned home, the Detroit Free Press reports.
"Moments later, Trooper 2 advised that they were now being shot at from the same location," state police announced via Twitter.
State troopers responded to the home on foot, and the man came out of the home and began firing again, police said.
The troopers returned fire, killing him, according to Michigan State Police.
