NY Officer Uses Patrol Vehicle to Disarm Woman Pointing Gun at Traffic

She was knocked to the ground and taken into custody and treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, police say.

A Nassau County, NY, officer used his patrol SUV to disarm a woman who was pointing a gun at vehicles in an intersection Tuesday afternoon.

The officer struck the woman with his vehicle when she pointed the gun at herself, Fox 5 reports.

She was knocked to the ground and taken into custody and treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, police say.

Police say the woman fired one round into the air before she was disarmed.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder praised the officer’s quick thinking, CBS New York reports. "He did a great job. He's our hero of the day," Ryder said.

"They used their vehicle to stop that threat. Other option on the table is to take up the gun and shoot her. They didn't do that. They chose an alternative option that they thought quickly to react and probably save people's lives, including their own," Ryder said.
