Los Angeles police will not create a computer database of the city's Muslim population in an effort to better understand them, as previously planned.
"While I believe the department's efforts to reach out to the Muslim communities were well-intentioned, the mapping proposal has created a level of fear and apprehension that made it counterproductive," the LA Times quoted Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as saying.
Los Angeles police say they will reach out to the Muslim community in other ways so they can identify potential extremism.
